Alice Britt, Textile Designer
"Beauty of style
and harmony
and grace
and good rhythm
depend on simplicity." -Plato
I was raised in Colorado by my father, a Swiss chef (and former vaudville dancer), and my mother, a mathematician from Kansas. Little did I know at the time that my mother's scientific curiosity and my father's artistic spirit would combine to form the seed from which my present work would grow.
I left Colorado to attend graduate school at the University of Washington and adopted Seattle as my permanent home. After 33 years of teaching, I "retired" in 2005.
Throughout my life, I have traveled widely. And over time, wherever I went, I found myself drawn to the textile arts. I became especially intrigued with the interplay of color and texture and captivated by the elegant simplicity of Japanese design.
As my interest in fiber arts developed, I began to study with established master dyers and silk artists both in the United States and Canada.
